Since 1947, Commers Water has been rooted in solving real water problems for Twin Cities homes and businesses. From humble beginnings tackling hard water to pioneering customized water treatment and purification, our story is one of innovation, family leadership, and deep community connection.
In 1947, John Commers moved from Minneapolis to St. Anthony and quickly encountered the hard water problems many Minnesota residents still face today. Frustrated with the available options, John studied water science and conditioning at the local library and combined that knowledge with his mechanical engineering background from World War II to start his own company.
John’s goal was practical and customer-focused: “to build a better water softener that was service-free and easy to maintain.” Over the next decade, he sold systems, developed valuable industry experience, and built strong relationships that helped expand Commers’ reach and reputation.
In 1964, John handed the business to his son John G. Commers Jr. and his wife Patricia. Together, they grew the company into Minnesota’s largest independent water softener dealer, introduced salt delivery service, secured two U.S. patents, and began manufacturing customized softeners tailored to individual water conditions rather than one-size-fits-all units.

Commers didn’t stop at softeners. In 1978, the company marketed its first drinking water system, and by 1980 began working with emerging reverse osmosis technology, becoming one of Minnesota’s earliest residential RO providers.
With decades of refinement and real-world experience, Commers now offers a full suite of water solutions — from conditioning and filtration to commercial systems — designed for the Twin Cities’ unique water challenges.

Rob grew up immersed in the water treatment industry, learning from his parents and grandparents and mastering every aspect of the business firsthand. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, Rob helped shape Commers’ modern direction, emphasizing customer focus and satisfaction.
In 2002 he brought his wife Tiara on board and later, in 2013, partnered with his brother to lead the company into its third generation of family ownership.

Anthony’s experience with Commers began in childhood, helping with tasks as simple as stuffing envelopes.
Since graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1996, Anthony has worked full-time in the business, focusing on helping customers select the right systems for their homes and water conditions.

After a successful hospitality career, Tiara joined Commers in 2002 to lead the Builders Division.
She brings award-winning leadership and industry relationship expertise to working with contractors and builders across the region.

Married in 1964, John Jr. and Patricia worked side by side for decades, building the company’s reputation for quality and service and fostering a workplace where every employee is treated like family.
